IFA UJ students' visit to L'Université Clermont Auvergne and the Ecole Bilingue Internationale in Clermont-Ferrand, France

From 16 to 21 March 2017 six first-year MA programme students visited the university and the bilingual school in Clermont-Ferrand, France as part of CLAVIER (connected learning and virtual intercultural exchange research) network's "intercultural encounters: gaining professional experience", organised by Dr. Marcin Kleban,  coordinator of the Applied Linguistics programme, and Simon Ensor, an English teacher at L'Université Clermont Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand. The main objectives of the project were to gain experience in teaching English as a foreign language and learn about educational practices in another country.

The Polish students enjoyed the opportunity to observe how English is taught in the International Bilingual School in Clermont-Ferrand, which offers multi-cultural education in English and French to its students of more than 30 different nationalities.  The students observed the methods and teaching strategies employed at different educational stages. Moreover, the school teachers shared their experience in terms of the teaching techniques, and the materials for students of different ages.

Another part of the project consisted in teaching English to the undergraduate students at the university, which was a great opportunity for the Polish students to put theory into practice. They had to apply the knowledge gained during their studies to adapt to the educational needs of the groups they tutored.

The project was not only educational, but also cultural. The IFA UJ students enjoyed the opportunity to explore the city, learn about the local culture and everyday student life with the help of the friendly French hosts.

The project was also an opportunity for students to develop their project management skills, as they had to plan the visit carefully beforehand. They filed an application, applied for funding to two organisations, which required the completion of a number of documents. Thanks to financial support from “Bratniak”, a university foundation, the group was able to take full advantage of the visit and use the time to fully benefit from the educational opportunities it offered.
